Gummy Vitamins and Sugar: What to Check Before You Buy

Gummy vitamins have become hugely popular because they are easy to take and taste like a treat. That taste usually comes from sugar or sweeteners, so it is worth checking the label before you buy.

Find the Supplement Facts panel

In the United States, dietary supplements carry a Supplement Facts panel. Look for:

  • Serving size. Many gummies list two or more gummies as one serving, so the totals are for that number.
  • Total sugars and added sugars. These are listed in grams per serving.
  • Other ingredients. Below the panel you will find sweeteners, colors, gelatin or pectin.

Sugar-free is not always simple

Some gummies replace sugar with sugar alcohols, such as sorbitol or maltitol. These contain fewer calories, but large amounts can upset some people's stomachs. Others use plant-based sweeteners. Neither is right or wrong; it depends on what suits you.

Compare a few products

Line up two or three options and compare the added sugar per serving, the nutrients you actually want and the price per serving rather than per bottle. A cheaper bottle with a larger serving size may not be better value.

Look after your teeth

Gummies are sticky, and sugar that clings to teeth can contribute to cavities. Taking them with a meal, drinking water afterwards and keeping up regular brushing all help.

Keep them away from children

Because they look like candy, gummies should be stored out of children's reach. Some, especially those with iron, can be harmful in large amounts. If a child swallows too many, contact Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222.
